In the run-up to the in-person conference, The World Mycotoxin Forum® presented virtually three one-day pre-conferences focusing on specific mycotoxin topics. The ‘human exposome’ pre-conference was a great success. The concept of the exposome and the role of mycotoxins in this field was introduced. Current analytical and biological issues in exposomics were discussed and specific methodological advances presented. This pre-conference also looked into advances in human biological monitoring of mycotoxin biomarkers that is considered a good approach to obtain data that could help determine human exposure, assess risks, and identify relationships between diseases and mycotoxins.

We look back on a very succesful pre-conference. The effects of mycotoxins on animal health have been known for many years. However, with the development of new analytical methods allowing routine detection of a large number of mycotoxins, knowledge in the field has evolved. Emerging mycotoxins for which toxic effects are not well characterised and no guidelines are available, raise new animal health issues. Also, little data is available on the impact that mycotoxins could have in combination or during chronic exposure. Finally, strategies to avoid the harmful effects of mycotoxins on animal health and performances are still being developed.

The final pre-conference in the series appeared to be very successful. The chemical diversity of mycotoxins and their varying concentration ranges in a wide range of agricultural commodities, food and feed pose a great challenge to analytical chemists. The different chemical and physicochemical properties of the mycotoxins require specific extraction, clean-up, separation, and detection methods. The ‘analysis’ pre-conference presented recent developments and trends in multi-mycotoxin determination in various matrices, from emerging rapid methods to comprehensive mass spectrometry-based methods, as well as addressed limitations of the methodologies.
